The Finnish Club that was to grow into the present Finnish Society of Melbourne was founded in May 1958.
The society has since offered Finns an opportunity to meet and speak their native language through our various events and activity groups.
The Red Robin Hosiery factory building on Pier Street, Altona, was purchased in 1971. It was renovated in countless working bees by tireless club members to make it a home for all Finns in Melbourne. Known now as the Finnish Hall. Various additions has been made over time, subsequently making it the site of the Finnish Library, Sauna, and Shop.

2017 had been a big year for us. The Finnish Festival committee lead the organisation of the 3-day Finnish Festival at Easter that brought together about 600 Finns and friends of Finland from around Australia to celebrate Finnish culture, sports and food. Sauna committee brainstormed and realised the Finnish Hall sauna, which was opened at Midsummer. Finland 100 committee in turn has planned a series of events to celebrate the centenary year of Finland’s independence, culminating in the Independence Day Gala Dinner at Melbourne Town Hall in December.
